How to make popup notification

I need when somebody logged in a smilie image should be appear beside his/her name. and if somebody offline the another smilie face should appear with his/her name. the smilie diffentiate offline and online users. just like yahoo messenger. and if somebody is online in the fnd list.the popup message should come that xyz has been logged in. Although this post seems quite old but I would I like to share a good piece of article which explains how to implement such sort of scenarios and gives you good start up point. not only it explains how to show a pop up bar but also explains how to scrolls your controls smoothly on the form.
